I think if things get more economically desperate, people will get more ideological and desperate and do things like this. With conservatism comes austerity, making like harder for everyone. That is why Europe is fucked, it’ll be force vs. everyone else and that never works. People will get more extreme and there will be more violence. That is what happens when you get a welfare based debt, Australia is lucky to have a debt based on infrastructure, but we need to get rid of welfare asap.

It’s terrifying though, to think someone can be literally butchered to death on the streets of London. I can’t help but think a conceal carry would have saved that mans life. Remember, police don’t stop crime. They show up after and investigate them. The Law stops crime by providing a consequence.

First of all, people are way to concerned about a surplus. You need to realise that debt is good so long as you can pay it off and you are using it to invest in infrastructure (not paying welfare/building bombs). We are spending $24bn on infrastructure which is good, but also subsidising fossil fuels, which is bad. We are also funding a national fibre optic broadband network, which is also good.

We are spending $113bn on Defense, up $10bn from last year. We are buying more attack aircraft with that money. This is bad spending and bad policy, we should not be an interventionist nation. We have no business in other countries internal affairs. Our military should be small and protect our borders only.

The baby bonus has been removed. This is good, we will save money in what was bad Howard policy. It will be replaced by and increase to the family benefit.

Mining tax estimates went down from $13bn to $3bn. This isn’t bad or good, it’s what you get when you let the miners write the tax.

There will be a tax crackdown on big business saving over $4bn. This is good because private companies do not need government support. Corporatism is very bad.

All in all a deficit over investment and infrastructure is good, a deficit over welfare (ie. Europe) is bad.

This is an alright budget. Don’t believe the fear the media will obviously give it.

The experience of Portugal—where decriminalisation led to an observable fall in drug deaths—suggests that a much better approach exists. Imprisonment is an immoral and ineffective way of handling mental health issues and other drivers of drug abuse. It is cheaper and more effective to handle these issues in the sphere of public health. Legalising and taxing safe drugs will raise revenue to fund better support services for addicts and their families. Decriminalising other drugs will broaden options for treatment and allow help to be extended without the threat of criminal sanctions. Effective policy must offer help and treatment, but must also recognise that most drug users are neither addicts nor criminals.

In handling drugs, policymakers should also take note of their one success: the campaign against tobacco. The anti-tobacco campaign has reduced the proportion of smokers by 40% over 20 yearsthrough a combination of advertising, warnings, and social sanctions in a legal framework. It is a far more successful model than prohibition, and a broader application of it should be considered.

Ultimately however, civil liberties must be respected. A belief in civil liberties does not require approval of every private choice, merely acceptance that choice should exist. The alternative has cost us too much, for too long.

Such wars are futile: demand always creates supply, and ad-hoc attacks on supply channels do nothing other than reduce the quality of drugs, and increase the risks. History shows that even the harshest attempts to outlaw a market do not make the market go away, but merely create an unregulated black market in place of the legal one, making criminals of regular citizens and funding organised crime.
